Maybe I seem like all I do is complain now that I have to deal with other parents at the school. Maybe I am the one with the problem, but I just donít get it. I work the job I do specifically for the benefits and flexibility that come with it. That way I have the ability to come and go as I please. I figured this would work out for the best when picking my child up from school. I could leave at my leisure and not have to race against the crowd to get to the school, find a good parking spot, and therefore I could be right there waiting for my child when class was over.
Classes at the elementary school let out at 3:00 p.m. every week day except for kindergarten and that is letting out temporarily at 2:50 until later in the year. I leave my house at 2:30. I get to the school at 2:35. Every possible place to park is full. In fact, as I leave my car and walk from the next block over that I had to park on, I canít help but notice what some of the other parents are doing while waiting in their cars. One man was reading a book, a woman was painting her nails, and another man was, Iím not kidding, sleeping. It looked like these particular parents had set up camp a while before I had even shown up. None of these parents had kindergartners that got out earlier. All of their kids got out at 3:00 and I knew this because they were still sitting there when I walked back to my car after picking my child up from class. However, they felt the overwhelming need to get there early enough to get the best parking spot. The funniest part about it is that this is not an isolated incident. Everyday itís the same and it is not just the three parents I mentioned. It is the majority of parents. Iím not sure if any of them actually have jobs or even left their spots after dropping their kid off in the morning.
Itís hard to believe that I still have a 3 year old left to start school, leaving me with at least 8 years to try and figure out how to fit in and belong as a parent at this school. Ugh!
